Buying a VIP number: prepare for the transfer
An account-holder and verification checklist for a new premium mobile number, with practical steps to prepare for a service transfer.
When choosing a memorable mobile number, confirm how it will reach your account before paying. Buying a number, moving it to another account holder and transferring its mobile service are related but separate steps.
Confirm who can authorise the move
Ask who currently holds the number and what process will put it in your name. A sale receipt by itself does not complete a service transfer. The current account holder and the receiving service need to follow the required authorisation and identity checks.
Keep the existing number active
Do not cancel the current mobile service before a transfer. ACMA explains that disconnected numbers cannot be ported. Keep access to the service for verification, and follow the receiving service's instructions for activation rather than assuming every SIM or eSIM uses the same steps.
Prepare matching details
- The complete number, shared privately when appropriate.
- The account holder information requested for the transfer.
- The account reference or other service details requested.
- Access to any required identity verification.
Keep identification and account details out of public forms and comments. Confirm the information through the official transfer process.
Plan for the changeover
Check the expected timing directly with the receiving service. Transfers can be delayed by incorrect details or verification issues. After completion, test incoming and outgoing calls, SMS and mobile data. Update important account recovery details if your everyday number has changed.
Our mobile number transfer guide has the full checklist and the link to ACMA's official guidance. If you are still choosing a number, return to the buyer's guide or browse the catalogue.
