1. Confirm the account-holder arrangements
Moving a number to another person and moving a service between accounts or networks are different processes. Before buying, confirm who is authorised to arrange the move and what is required to put the number in your name. A payment receipt alone does not complete a transfer.
2. Keep the current service active
Do not cancel the existing service in advance. ACMA explains that an active mobile number can usually be ported, while a disconnected number cannot. Check that the receiving service will accept the number before starting.
3. Prepare the requested details
The transfer process may ask for account-holder information, an account reference and identity checks. Make sure the details match the existing service. Keep access to the current number for verification. Share personal information only through the official process.
4. Follow the receiving service's instructions
Activation steps differ for SIM and eSIM services. Follow the instructions you receive rather than assuming that you should activate a temporary number first, or wait until after the port. Ask for the expected timing and any charges before proceeding.
5. Test the completed transfer
When completion is confirmed, test incoming and outgoing calls, SMS and mobile data. Update business listings and important account recovery details when appropriate. If a request fails, ask for the reason and check account details before retrying.
Official guidance
This checklist was reviewed on 19 October 2026 using ACMA's guidance on keeping or porting a phone number. ACMA covers authorisation, active services, timing and moving a number to another person. Requirements for your transfer should be confirmed directly with the services involved.
